Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While small curves usually don’t cause problems, curves that worsen over time can pose serious health risks — very large curves can damage the joints and lead to arthritis of the spine, cause the ribs to rub against the pelvis and result in pain, and, in significant cases, contribute to lung problems.
